Pietà (1499) by Michelangelo

Michelangelo Buonarroti created this magnificent sculpture of unparalleled beauty during 1498 and 1499. Pietà, which depicts (a quite young) Mary with her son Jesus on her lap after his crucifixion, was made in marble and stands 1,95 meters high, with a width of 1,74 meters. One of the most well-know works by the Italian polymath, it can be found in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. Michelangelo signed this and nothing else.

The more painting resembles sculpture, the better I like it, and the more sculpture resembles painting, the worse I like it.
